We visited Place de la Concorde and happened to be walking down the street where the American Embassy is. There's lot's of crowd control gates around it and French National Police guarding it. A few guards with bulletproof vests and automatic weapons at the corners and entrance so don't let that put you off, but realize too that they're not just standing around to give directions to some poor tourist.

Look at it this way. If someone should attack the US Embassy the French guards job would be to kill them. Not stand around giving directions to some tourist from Wisconsin.
This is the year of Morocco in Paris and we saw "The Moroccan Gate" which is huge and elaborate but large architectural details are painted on it. It's such a fake we didn't even walk through it. >>
